Best Face Care Tips for Age Spots
Well, one of the sadder facts of life, it seems, is that as we get older, some of us, if not most of us, have to deal with unsightly age spots. So, what is the best face care for age spots? That’s what this post is going to examine.
But before I get into that, let’s take a look at what causes age spots in the first place. Can they be prevented? Can age spots be treated? Keep reading to get those questions answered.
What Are Age Spots?
The medical definition is: Age spots are irregular increases in melanin that occur in the outer layer of the skin (known as the epidermis). Though they are generally painless, they do lead to the noticeable discoloration of the skin, and range from light brown to black. Age spots are also referred to as liver spots, although they are unrelated to the liver or liver functions in the body.
Causes of Skin Discolorations Skin discoloration is caused by increased pigmentation, a process that is caused by the following factors:
- aging
- too much exposure to sunlight
- exposure to other forms of ultraviolet light, such as tanning beds or sunlamps
- antibiotics (such as tetracycline)
- heredity
- foods that contain the chemical psoralens (example: parsley, lime and parsnips)
- diuretics
- other medications
If you are on the medication and eating a lot of the foods mentioned in the above list, age spots are caused by the fact that these items increase the skin’s sensitivity to the sun. And when unprotected, discoloration of the skin can be the result.
Around the age of forty is when age spots can start appearing. Most of them seem to show up on the backs of y our hands and forearms and yes, our faces.
Best Face Care Tips for Removing Age Spots
Considered mostly harmless, treatment for age spots in generally not needed. However, there is a cosmetic interest for those who are concerned about skin care and the ugly appearance of age spots on the face. Therefore, the dermatology industry has produced many, many anti-aging face care and skin products - creams and lotions – that can help diminish the appearance of age spots. Anti-aging face care and skin care products contain the following ingredients:
- Micro-collagen: creams and lotions that list this as an ingredient can help minimize liver spots or age spots
- Vitamin C: beneficial in helping to regenerate elastin and collagen
- Glycolic acid: increases the rate at which skin (the epidermis) is shed and this promotes the growth of younger-looking skin
- Rumux: used in many skin and face care anti-aging products to decrease the production of melanin
- Vitamin E: beneficial to keeping skin looking young and fresh when added to creams and lotions

Other Methods for Treating Age Spots
Another option for treating age spots is cryotherapy (freezing). This form of treatment peels away age spots by first spraying liquid nitrogen onto the skin and then waiting for two to three weeks for the new skin underneath to push up and cause the peeling of the upper layer of discoloration. The downside of this treatment is that the cryotherapy can cause some pinkness and scarring. An increasingly popular method for removing and treating age spots is laser treatment. Although it is more expensive, it has less side effects than cryotherapy. The method of laser treatment removes age spots by focusing and targeting the brown pigmentation in the skin. It does have some side effects, but they are minor. Some slight swelling and sensitivity can occur, but these symptoms are temporary and usually last for only a couple of days. Probably the most common way to approach treatment for age spots is using bleaching creams created specifically for faces and other areas of the skin. Another way to treat exisisting age spots is to use chemical peels and makeup that camouflages the unsightly spots.
Best Face Care Tips for Preventing Age Spots
I keep harping on this, but proper skin care is vital to the prevention of age spots. Read the following simple steps to help you prevent skin discolorations, wrinkles and other signs of aging:
- Wear protective clothing, like a long-sleeved shirt, pants and skirt and don’t forget a wide-brimmed hat.
- Wear sunglasses that block UV whenever you go outside or drive in the car.
- Avoid the sun between 10 am and 4 pm, as that is when the sun’s rays are the strongest.
- Put on a sunscreen with a minimum SPF of 15 but preferably higher. Apply it 30 minutes before you expect to be in the sun and then reapply it often. Wear sunscreen year-round – even in the winter.
- Maintain a healthy, well-balanced diet.
- drinking 6-8 glasses of water a day.
Wrapping it up, even if you choose to undergo treatment or use some kind of anti-age spots face care product, you still need to follow the steps above for preventing age spots. Hope you found this article helpful!
